6 of The Best Places for

Afternoon Tea in Windermere & Bowness

Is there anything more quintessentially English than afternoon tea? And is there anything better than afternoon tea in the beautiful Lake District? We don’t think so.

Dainty finger sandwiches with the crusts cut off (usually). A selection of cakes – don’t mind if we do. Scones with jam and cream – which do you put on first? And a pot of piping hot tea to wash it all down – or perhaps a glass of fizz if you’re feeling a bit naughty. You can get afternoon tea in many hotels and restaurants in Windermere, but we’ve rounded up…

6 of The Best Afternoon Teas in Bowness & Windermere

Including a couple that offers something a little bit different from the norm. And, if you’d like somewhere nice to stay between excursions, we’ve got just the Windermere or Bowness cottage for you.

Lindeth Fell Country House

Lyth Valley Road, Bowness

Not only do you get a treat for the taste buds with your afternoon tea at the Lindeth Fell Country House Hotel – you get a treat for the eyes too with the fabulous views over Windermere. Lovely.

Indulge yourself with a selection of finger sandwiches, warm buttermilk scones and sweet treats, and choose any tea you fancy – from traditional English Breakfast tea to smoky Lapsang Souchong.

Or you can add a glass of fizz if you’re feeling decadent.

The Fizzy Tarte

Ash Street, Bowness

They take afternoon tea seriously at the Fizzy Tarte, a café/bar in the heart of Bowness, but they’ve given it their own sophisticated, modern twist.

You can opt for the Classic Afternoon Tea, which includes a selection of mini cakes and sandwiches, savoury bites, warm scones, artisan crisps and tea or coffee. Take it up a luxurious notch with a glass of Prosecco.

Or push the boat out and add a bottle of Laurent Perrier Cuveé Rosé. And any of their afternoon tea choices can be made gluten-free if you prefer.

Cedar Manor

Ambleside Road, Windermere

When it comes to afternoon tea, The Cedar Manor Hotel likes to do things properly, and they like to think theirs is up there with the best you can get in the Lake District.

So as well as the usual finger sandwiches and savouries, warmed scones with home-made strawberry jam and clotted cream, a selection of tasty desserts and cakes, and a choice of loose-leaf teas or filter coffee, everything is served up on their own Royal Crown Derby bone china tea service.

You can add a glass of fizz or a bottle of bubbly too, if you feel like celebrating.

The Wild Boar

Crook Road, Between Bowness and Kendal

Who says afternoon tea has to be all finger sandwiches and mini cakes? At the Wild Boar, they’ve gone rustically rogue with their alternative afternoon tea.

So it’s delights such as mini fish & chips, roasted red pepper pork scratchings, pigs in blankets and crispy fried chicken on the menu.

Tradition hasn’t been completely abandoned though – there are still classic scones with cream and jam to finish. They also offer a vegetarian alternative afternoon tea, so non-meat eaters don’t have to go without.

The Beech Hill Hotel

Newby Bridge, Road, Windermere

If it’s afternoon tea with a view you’re after then get yourself booked in at the Beech Hill Hotel.

On a clear day you can see across the lake to the fell tops beyond, including the Old Man of Coniston and Helvellyn. Serving up all the usual treats from sandwiches to scones, you can add Pimm’s, Prosecco or Champagne if you fancy splashing out.

And they haven’t forgotten the little ones either – they also do a children’s afternoon tea that includes mini sandwiches, jelly and ice cream, and flavoured milks.

The Belsfield Hotel

Kendal Rd, Bowness

Afternoon tea at the Belsfield Hotel overlooking Windermere is a sophisticated and elegant affair.

And, there are also plant-based, gluten-free and children’s options available alongside their traditional afternoon tea, so no one has to miss out on their luxurious selection of sweet and savoury treats.

You can look forward to tasty treats such as mushroom & tarragon eclair, crayfish & prawn cocktail roll, and Bakewell tart – all washed down with your choice of loose-leaf tea or coffee.

And if you feel the setting calls for a glass of Champagne – you can have that too.

What Is Afternoon Tea?

Afternoon tea is a quintessentially British tradition that’s evolved into a delightful social occasion. It’s a light meal typically enjoyed between lunch and dinner, usually served between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.

The centrepiece of afternoon tea is a selection of teas, often a variety of black teas like Earl Grey or Assam, though herbal and flavoured teas are also common. Accompanying the tea are three tiers of delicious treats:

Sandwiches: Delicate finger sandwiches with various fillings like cucumber, smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise, ham, or cream cheese and chutney.

They’re usually crustless and elegantly presented.

Scones: These are a highlight! Served warm, they come in plain or fruit varieties and are accompanied by clotted cream and jam.

There’s a long-standing debate about whether the cream or jam goes first.

Pastries and Cakes: The top tier is reserved for sweet treats—miniature cakes, pastries, tarts, and sometimes chocolates.

These vary from place to place and can include delights like petits fours, macarons, or slices of Victoria sponge cake.

When enjoying afternoon tea, it’s a relaxed affair. The tea is served in fine china, and the food is often presented on beautiful tiered stands. The emphasis is on indulgence, refinement, and taking the time to savour each bite while engaging in conversation.

It’s not just about the food and drink

It’s an experience steeped in tradition and elegance, offering a delightful respite in the middle of the day. Whether it’s a casual get-together or a formal affair, afternoon tea is a charming way to enjoy delectable treats and quality time with friends or family.
