Hawkshead Parking – 2 places to find a space

When it comes to parking in picturesque Hawkshead, your options are somewhat limited.

The charming village centre with its narrow, cobbled streets, archways and alleyways, squares and courtyards is a car-free zone and all the better for it, so don’t even think about trying to find a parking space – the double yellow line painters have been very busy.

Hawkshead Car Park

If you’re staying in Hawkshead you’ll probably have private car parking at your holiday cottage, but if you’re just visiting for the day, there is one large main car park at the edge of the village.

Located on Main Street, it does get busy at the weekends, and in the summer months, so arrive early if you can.

There are also public toilets if you need to spend a penny.

Take the bus

If you’re staying in Ambleside or Coniston, you can leave the car behind and jump on the 505 bus to Hawkshead.

Or, if you’re based in Keswick, Windermere or Grasmere, you can catch the 555 to link up with the 505 in Ambleside.

You can plan your journey easily on the Stagecoach website, and all single fares are still capped at £2 until the end of the year.

Cross Lakes Shuttle

In the summer months, you can catch the Cross Lakes Shuttle, a combined boat and bus ticket for travel between Bowness, Sawrey, Hawkshead, Coniston and Grizedale.

And, you can even take your bike on board, if you want to get around on two wheels as well.

Please note: You can’t purchase tickets online – get them at Bowness Pier then. Show your boat ticket to the driver to board the bus.

  • Well-behaved dogs travel free
