The best Staveley Pubs
Lace up your walking boots and prepare for an adventure that combines the natural beauty of the Lakes with the cosy, convivial atmosphere of Staveley’s finest pubs.
Whether you’re a beer enthusiast, a food lover, or simply in search of a welcoming spot to relax after a day’s exploration…
The pubs of Staveley are waiting to be discovered
Each pub has its own unique character, whether it’s the rustic charm of traditional interiors, the crackling fires that invite you to stay longer, or the friendly locals who are always ready for a chat.
Visiting these pubs offers a glimpse into the life of the Lake District, blending history, hospitality, and community spirit.
Eagle & Child Inn

Describing itself as a ‘proper Lakeland pub’, you can find the charmingly traditional Eagle & Child Inn on the main street in Staveley.
Serving Cumbrian ales and homemade pub grub – freshly made and locally sourced wherever possible – this homely, family-owned pub has slate floors, exposed beams, antiques and curios dotted around, and real log fires, just like a proper pub should. And there’s a beer garden by the river too.
Hungry? The regularly changing menu features all the pub classics you’d expect (with plenty of choice for veggies and vegans), and there’s a burger night on Thursdays (with a quiz night thrown in), fresh fish on Fridays, and a choice of roast dinners on Sundays. Lovely.
Hawkshead Brewery – Now Permanently Closed

The Staveley beer hall closed as of 10/09/2024.
A boon for beer and ale lovers, you can’t visit Staveley without a trip to the Hawkshead Brewery. It’s a brewery, a beer hall on two levels (woofers are welcome on the ground floor) and a bottle shop. And they serve food and sell merch too – Hawkshead Brewery beanie to keep your head warm on the fells, anyone?
Did we mention the brewery tours? They do those every Friday – just make sure you book in advance.
Located in a large, glass-fronted building on Mill Yard in Staveley, the lively bar has 14 handpumps filling glasses with the full range of Hawkshead Brewery beers every day. We’ll drink (responsibly, of course) to that. They also hold regular events, with live music to tap your toes to, and street food to fill your face with. Good times guaranteed.
The Watermill Inn, Ings

Just outside Staveley, down a quiet country lane off the A591 in the small village of Ings, you can find the welcoming Watermill Inn. Family-run, this traditional Lake District hostelry serves a wide range of ales brewed in its own on-site microbrewery (the Windermere Brewing Company).
You must try a pint of the award-winning ‘Collie Wobbles’ when you visit. You can even buy a case to take home with you too, if it’s your kind of sup – or any of the other 13 beers they brew. Beer not your thing? There are plenty of wines, spirits and soft drinks to choose from too.
They’ll feed you well too. It’s traditional pub grub (with plenty of regularly changing specials), served in hearty, belt-loosening portions and made with locally sourced ingredients where possible. Nowt wrong wi’ that! And if the weather is being kind, you can take a seat in the spacious beer garden to enjoy your food and drink.
The Whistling Pig Bar

You can easily miss the hidden gem that is the Whistling Pig. It’s not on the high street. No, this local pub is on a Camping and Caravanning Club site just off the A591.
You don’t have to be staying on the campsite to visit as it’s open to everyone to go and have a drink and something to eat after a day out in the surrounding countryside. They also have a car park if you haven’t arrived on foot.
Relaxing, friendly and informal, they serve a great selection of craft beers from the Northern Monkey Brewery, belly-filling pub grub (and some specials), and dish up delicious roasts on a Sunday – one recent visitor described it as the best roast they’d ever had. There’s plenty of outside space for when the sun’s shining, plus occasional live music and a quiz night once a month on a Sunday. Quiz and a roast – sounds good to us.
