For visitors with a sense of adventure, Keswick is paradise: on land and on water – hiking, biking, climbing and running, canoeing, kayaking and other water sports.
There’s so much going on to get the heart pumping in the great outdoors
Mountains to scale, lakes to explore, and indoor climbing walls to stop you climbing the walls if the weather’s not playing ball.
So whether you’re an experienced adventurer, only getting started, or just want to have some energetic fun, pack your outdoor kit and head to Keswick for days out you won’t forget in a hurry.
Keswick Launch Co.
Fancy being your own skipper and sailing round Derwentwater to explore the lake, its inlets, beaches and intriguing islands? You can hire a self-drive motorboat – or a rowing boat if you fancy a workout too – from Keswick Launch Co.
You can rent a motorboat big enough for up to eight adults and set sail on a two-hour cruise around the lake – you can even go all Swallows and Amazons and land on three of the lake’s four islands for a little explore (Derwent Island is private), or pull into one of the bays dotted around the shore and have a picnic.
Whinlatter Forest
Adrenaline fuelled adventure, you say? Well, Whinlatter Forest (England’s only true mountain forest) would like to say hello and welcome. Welcome to exhilarating mountain bike trails – including the longest purpose-built trail in the Lake District. Miles and miles and miles of walking trails for hikers of all abilities. And challenging running trails, from a leg-stretching 2.5km to 5 and 10km routes for longer distance-lovers, which reward the big climbs with stunning views. Want more?
There are also the numerous treetop adventures of Go Ape for those with a head for heights – you can see Scotland on a clear day from the top of the highest route, and rugged all-terrain Segway hire if you prefer to keep your feet nearer the ground as you explore on two wheels.
And, you can even explore the forest roads on horseback if you’ve come to the Lakes with your horsebox.
Kong Escape Room
A climber is missing. The clock is ticking. The weather is bad – really bad. Strong winds, lashing rain, low visibility. You only have an hour to solve the clues and help the mountain rescue team locate the fallen climber. Can you do it in time?
A trip to the Kong Escape Room in Keswick is a great way to spend some time on a rainy afternoon. Working together as a team, it’s up to you to work out the various puzzles and find out where the stricken climber is so the rescue helicopter can save him before it’s too late. Good luck!
Keswick Climbing Wall
If it’s too wet to tackle the fells, you’re new to climbing, or you just want to have a bit of fun, then a mere five-minute drive from Keswick is the beautifully located Keswick Climbing Wall – it’s right next to Castlerigg Stone Circle, with views over to the imposing Helvellyn range through the always-open double-doors.
Inside you’ll find over 40 rope climbs and a large bouldering area for climbers of all abilities and ages, with experienced instructors on hand to help and advise.
