From small-scale shops you won’t find anywhere else, to idyllic hikes tucked away in lush woodland, there are plenty of experiences waiting to be discovered.
Read on for some ideas on how to make the most out of these two locations in Cumbria.
Whether you’re looking for outdoor activities or unique shops, Windermere and Bowness have plenty to offer.
Explore the famous lake with a leisurely boat ride or hike up one of its many surrounding hills for incredible views over Cumbria’s countryside.
If you want to shop, why not visit some of Bowness’ independent boutiques and charming tea rooms? Or stroll around one of the town’s many parks, gardens, and woodland walks to soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
Take advantage of its hiking trails
Windermere and Bowness have plenty of beautiful trails that make perfect day trips. Whether you’re looking for a quiet stroll along the lake or a challenging hill climb, there are walks to suit all tastes.
Check out Orrest Head to take in impressive views of Windermere and the surrounding area. Or tackle Loughrigg Fell for breathtaking panoramas over Morecambe Bay and the Langdale Pikes. And don’t forget to explore Grizedale Forest with its many trails and picturesque tree-lined paths.
Orrest Head
Orrest Head provides an easy and scenic hike through a beautiful woodland area. Along the way, you’ll encounter pretty flowers and wildlife. A special sculpture awaits children partway up the trail.
At the summit, you’ll find seating and a stunning view of the lake. An information board identifies the surrounding mountains.
The path is accessible for wheelchair and pram users that takes you right to the top, which is great if you have accessibility needs.
Brant Fell
Brant Fell overlooks the charming town of Bowness-on-Windermere, often called just Bowness or Windermere.
While the path up the fell can be steep and a bit muddy, the stunning views from the top on a clear day make it all worthwhile.
To the north, you’ll spot the small Orrest Head, a spot Mr. Wainwright explored on his first Lake District adventure. Looking west, you’ll see Grizedale Forest across Windermere.

A little further afield, near Hawkshead, you’ll find breathtaking views, stunning artwork, and endless forest trails, at Grizedale forest.
Explore the forest on two wheels, foot or horseback and keep your eyes peeled along the way for our unique sculptures which are dotted throughout the forest.
For more of a challenge, test your nerve and swing among the trees on one of the Go Ape courses.
Explore unique shopping in local shops
Windermere and Bowness offer a range of unique shops perfect for finding one-of-a-kind souvenirs or gifts. Nestled between the cobblestone streets, you’ll find everything from antiques and handmade jewellery to local art, homewares and much more.
Nearby, take a walk through the quaint village of Ambleside to find truly special items from small boutique stores and independent craftspeople.

Enjoy an invigorating stroll or mountain bike ride around Claife Viewing Station and Windermere West Shore. Spend a peaceful afternoon at Brockhole Visitor Centre admiring their landscaped garden before visiting the Beatrix Potter Exhibition to gain insight into the famous author’s works.

Holehird Gardens is a 10 acre fellside garden, managed by the Lakeland Horticultural Society.
