A quick guide to Grasmere Parking

Where you can park, and when

It’s a perennial problem in the Lakes. Where to park? Because it’s so beautiful, everybody wants to come. And most people drive. Which means it gets busy and parking is at a premium – and it’s not cheap either (higher than the national average).

Fear not, though – we’re here to help.

Car parks you can use in Grasmere

If you’re lucky enough to be staying in Grasmere, chances are you’ve been able to park at your holiday cottage. But, if you’re travelling to Grasmere from elsewhere in the Lakes, here’s what you need to know to stop you driving round in circles looking for that elusive parking space.

Oh, and our best advice? Arrive early if you want to get a space, especially in the busier summer months.

Stock Lane | Broadgate Meadow | Red Bank Road | Thirteen Valleys | Allan Bank | Grasmere School | Street Parking

Stock Lane car park

If you’re heading to Grasmere from the south, the first car park you’ll come to is on the edge of the village on Stock Lane.

Be warned, if you need to spend a penny when you arrive, make sure you’ve got some change as there is a 50p charge to use the public toilets.

  • Run by the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA)
  • There are 52 general parking spaces
  • One EV charger
  • Coaches park up here too.
  • Open every day, it’s a pay & display and charges apply 24 hours a day.
  • Motorcycles can park for free.

Broadgate Meadow car park

If Stock Lane is full, there is another LDNPA pay & display car park a bit further into the village.

Turn right out of Stock Lane car park, drive through the village and take the first right after the village hall. Broadgate Meadow is next to the children’s play area and has 81 general spaces.

  • It’s open every day and charges apply 24 hours a day.
  • Motorcycles can park for free.

  • There’s also an EV charger.
  • Motorcycles can park for free.
  • It’s open every day from 8am to 6pm.
  • You can also buy a 3 or 7-day pass for this car park.

  • The gates open at 9am
  • The gates are locked at 5.30 every day
  • You can find it just before the Red Bank Road car park
  • It has 35 parking spaces if everywhere else is full.

At the weekends and during school holidays, visitors can use the car park at Grasmere School on Stock Lane.

  • Pop some money in the honesty box – all the money goes directly to the school.

Lastly, you can also try the layby on the A591

As it’s free to park on this long layby just outside Grasmere, it’s no wonder it’s a popular spot – especially if you’re planning to walk up Helm Crag.

It’s only a short walk into the village so it does get full quite quickly during busy times. The early bird and all that.

Can I park on the street in the village?

The short answer is no. There is very limited on-street parking and it is not encouraged – please use one of the official car parks in the village.
