Home > What’s on – Lake District events > Canoe Safari on Lake Windermere

Take a canoe trip with freshwater ecologist Dr Ellie Mackay!

Learn about Windermere’s glacial origins, what the lake’s mud tells us about its past environments, and the effect of temperature on the lake’s water structure and how this affects its habitat.

Explore what’s growing in the lake, discover who’s eating what, and learn about the lake’s top predators – most notably the rare arctic charr. As Windermere continues to make the news due to the algal blooms, Ellie will outline the main stressors on the lake and the impacts of climate change.

Be prepared to spend around an hour on the water paddling a Canadian canoe. Please make sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear you don’t mind getting wet. All specialist equipment including buoyancy aids will be provided.

For ages 8 and above. 6-year-olds welcome if accompanied by an adult.
