Much as the Barbican Quartet demonstrate their maturity beyond the core quartet repertoire, Brahms’ String Sextets were a coming of age for the composer.
From the delightful youthful exuberance of the first, the second betrays a composer totally in command, sophisticated, rich in invention, yet tinged with a beautiful darkness.
