Lights, camera, Alhambra! There’s something just that bit more special about watching a film in an independently owned traditional cinema rather than a soulless modern multiplex, but they’re few and far between these days. So, a holiday in Keswick isn’t complete without a visit to the Alhambra Cinema. Not only has this charming old-school cinema been going continuously since 1913, it’s also home to the annual Keswick Film Festival.

While the building and service might hark back to another time, the sound and picture quality is thoroughly modern, with two screens showing a wide range of new releases, occasional Hollywood classics, and live streams of theatre and concert performances. A visit to the Alhambra is an ideal way to relax in the evening after a day out on the fells, or escape from a rain-soaked afternoon.
