Location & Nearby

The Blue Duck is your perfect choice for a romantic getaway in beautiful Cumbria.

Venturing a short distance away, you'll discover the picturesque village of Hawkshead, offering a variety of excellent restaurants. For the adventurous souls, there's the "Go Ape" experience in nearby Grizedale. You can also explore the nearby Claife Viewing Station, Windermere West Shore, and Holehird Gardens.

Hawkshead, where the allure that once captivated its most famous residents, William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, still thrives. As you explore, you'll find yourself wandering through a treasure trove of narrow alleyways, quaint thoroughfares, charming archways, and delightful courtyards nestled amidst the whitewashed 17th-century houses.

This village boasts an array of inviting inns, cosy teashops, welcoming guest houses, and delightful gift shops waiting to be discovered. Don't miss the Beatrix Potter Gallery, home to an ever-changing exhibition showcasing the renowned author's captivating illustrations and stories.

As for the other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, he attended the Old Grammar School from 1779 to 1787, a historic building that still stands proudly today. You can step inside and visit the very place where the Lakeland poet cultivated his love for the art of poetry. You might even catch a glimpse of the desk where a young Wordsworth etched his name!

If you venture just ten miles away to Newby Bridge, you'll find even more attractions to enjoy, including the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, which offer daily sailings between Ambleside, Bowness, and Lakeside. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery and an abundance of attractions within easy reach, Hawkshead proves to be an ideal destination all year round.

Felt at home immediately. Such a user friendly place. I dont think that there was anything missing. It was home from home regarding kitchen essentials. Half a mile walk to the village which was the friendliest place. We ate in 2 pubs and both were good. The only negative was that there was just a small terrace which was classed as a garden. Not really suitable for dogs but it didn’t bother us because there were endless fields to walk them Highly recommended and would definitely return.

A gorgeous little cottage, just outside the main village of Hawkshead. Great views and very peaceful. It is very well equipped with everything you need. Lovely decor and very clean.

Very quiet area just a 15 min walk to Hawkshead village. The holiday home had everything you need for a short or long break, we only had 3 nights. Great that dogs are allowed, and even though the place looks small on the outside, 2 people and a dog fitted nicely inside. Stunning view from the living room with opened onto secure outside area with a bistro set. You have your own parking space, and as we found, we didn’t really need the car once it was parked, just remember to take a torch, no street lights once out of Hawkshead village. It has a good selection of boardgames when nothing can be found on the TV when in for the night. Also, a pint of milk waiting in the fridge upon arrival.

Amazing location, only a short drive to Ambleside and Windermere. Only a few minutes walk into the village with plenty of food / drink options once there. The property was spotless and had a homely feel to it. Everything you needed was right there whether that be the kitchen, washing facilities, breakfast on the balcony …..and it looks exactly as described in the photos (if not better). Will definitely be booking again next summer.

Quite and out of the way, outside area secure for dogs, lovely view and able to go for long walks everyday with no need to use the car! Short walk from village where you could have nice meals and pick up basics, well equipped for own catering.

The Blue Duck was perfect for us to stay in. The property is quietly tucked away out of the road, but still a short walk from Hawkshead and a 10-12 minute drive to Coniston. The property is well laid out, well furnished and well equipped. The patio at the front is lovely to sit out on and watch the world go by ...including the deer on the hillside. In terms of setting, we found Coniston quicker to get to than Ambleside (and easier to park in) - it has an Indian restaurant, garage, chip shop and we really liked The Sun pub - look it up, it's well hidden. Ambleside isn't too far away either however... Hawkshead itself has a Co-op and some nice restaurants (although these were always booked up, hence Coniston...) Just down the road there is a coffee shop where you can sit on the edge of the lake, 2 miles over the hill you get to Grizedale and its really well marked trails. There's also a nice little footpath for walking into Hawkshead, if you don't want to use the road all the time - check this on the map, it's pretty much hidden. All in all, you won't struggle for things to do for a week or so, and if you don't want to do anything, it's a lovely spot to sit still.
