The house was very well equipped. The kitchen and bathrooms were of a high standard. Very comfortable. Parking for the second car a bit tight. Overall would recommend this property, very central

The location is unbeatable—right in the heart of the town yet incredibly quiet and peaceful. It’s also conveniently close to a bus stop, making it easy to explore the area without a car. The cottage itself is beautifully designed with a great communal space perfect for relaxing or socializing. The dining table comfortably accommodated our group, making it ideal for shared meals and game nights. One of the highlights was definitely the sauna, which provided a perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking. A special touch was the complimentary Prosecco waiting for us upon arrival, adding a lovely welcome to our stay. However, there are a couple of areas that could use improvement: the absence of toiletries was a minor inconvenience, and a few finishing details such as condiments would would have been appreciated. While the check-in and check-out times are on the later and earlier side respectively, it didn’t detract significantly from our overall experience. We would stay here again!

Had a lovely stay, perfect location for a large group of old friends to catch up. Comfy sofas, lots of space to eat/drink, few essential amenities missing from inventory list (oil, salt, pepper etc) would bring along. Sauna a great addition.

Herald cottage is in an excellent location. It has accommodation over 3 floors which was great for a group of friends with a baby to allow for everyone to have their own space but get living space together. I had been worried about parking but the two spaces there were accessible and stress free. The only critique I would have of the cottage was that it wasn’t equipped for larger groups – there wasn’t 8 of many things in the kitchen for example there were only 3 cups – we did contact Lakeland and they bought round 4 more straight away and said some were due to be delivered midway through our stay but these never arrived. Having 7 cups for 7 people meant there was a constant round up and washing up of mugs. Things like bin bags and toilet roll were more a token than a supply- providing 1 bin bag for 7 people for 4 nights felt lacking. Overall it’s a great house for groups who want to be in the centre of Ambleside but be prepared to bring everything yourself in terms of utilities that you may need.

We absolutely loved staying here. It’s on 3 levels with is perfect for extra privacy if staying with different couples and if you have children. It’s a lovely quirky cottage with all the facilities that you need. Plus a sauna which is a bonus. We all felt at home and very comfortable. Only criticism was that some of the pots and pans were a bit dirty and also it would have been better to have a door on the living room due to noise to the other bedrooms downstairs. Looks like there was one which hasn’t been replaced. Otherwise great location and would definitely stay here again. Thank you.

Lovely place and excellent central location. Warm and cosy when we arrived and very well appointed. Very homely and lots of considerate extras such as DVDs, books, games etc plus a very welcome bottle of prosecco on arrival. We never managed to locate any salt and pepper pots though! Slightly tricky to find and the access was not for the faint-hearted especially with a long estate car. Inconsiderate parking by someone else in front of a no parking sign meant we had to park in a car park about 5-10 minutes away as car would not fit in garage. Didn't really detract though from an excellent stay and we would definitely return here again.

We had a fantastic stay over the bank holiday weekend! The property couldn't have been more perfect for our needs - in the centre of Ambleside, with a warm sauna and comfortable beds and clean bathrooms for everyone. Loved the open plan kitchen, dining and living area & the parking with a garage was an added bonus! Thank you for such a wonderful stay

Lovely cottage and great location to explore Ambleside. The cottage itself wasn’t ideal for young families - we have 3 small kids and it wasn’t ideal for them (eg lots of steep staircases etc). But that’s on me for not properly researching before booking. The team were always responsive to my questions before and during the stay. While it was great that the cottage offers free parking (at a premium in Ambleside), we had 2 large cars and the parking and maneuvering them was pretty tight and stressful. In summary, lovely place in the heart of Ambleside which would be great for adults only or families with older kids. Now we know this Id book here again in the future once our circumstances are different

We were a party of 7 who stayed here in August, which included friends from Spain who we were hosting. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Herald Cottage and the amenities are fantastic. This is genuinely a great place to stay and explore Ambleside, as well as easily get to Windermere / Kendal etc. Pros: - Great location which is walking distance to everything including Rothay Park and the lake. - High quality amenities which were everything we required for our stay, including a very large collection of books and films. - Power showers were really top-class! Cons: - Very difficult access. I scraped my car on the wall to the alley as it was really difficult to turn the car round. Decided to park elsewhere, but scraping the car was my driving issue too! - Couple of small issues re shower and boiler but fixed quickly by maintenance company. - Would benefit from a stair gate to stop toddlers going for the stairs in the lounge.

We had a great stay, despite some drizzle. Great location- nice to have local parking although we drove round twice to find the alley. Neighbours very helpful re: parking and bins etc and the house was spotless with all we needed. Thank you for the bubbles 😀

We had an amazing week at Michelle's cottage, we travelled with 3 young kids. Quiet town centre location, easy to walk to shops and the surrounding areas. Cottage looks like the photos, very comfortable and all amenities included. We had and issue with the upstairs radiators/thermostat but it was promptly solved as electric heaters were provided. We will definitely come back!.

A large homely property in an great location for discovering the area around Ambleside. Plenty of walks to do locally and the bus service was great to venture further afield. Six of us stayed at Herald cottage and we were all able to have our own bath/shower facilities. We all appreciated the use of the sauna and drying room. Parking is tight in the garage and only really suitable for a small car. But you can also park a second car in front of the house. Emma was a great host. Communication was quick and informative and any queries quickly dealt with. The bulb in the sauna stopped working and was promptly replaced. We would definitely recommend and return to Herald Cottage.

Very nice stay, everything clean and comfortable. Location was great, and communication was top notch. Just a note to reiterate what is said in the description but parking is very tight. We had a seven passenger van, and it didn’t fit into the small courtyard. We found public parking which wasn’t too pricey, especially when you realize you could park at the Lake Road car park (not the others) and pay only 1 pound per day if you get your ticket before about 8 AM (9 AM?)

The cottage is in a perfect location which meant we didn't need to use our cars once we arrived. Our party had 3 cars so one needed to be parked in a nearby car park but it was for a very reasonable weekly rate. The cottage itself is laid out well and in a way that the group could still have privacy when they desired. Lovely walks nearby and i would recommend the one up to the waterfall.

The location of this ABNB is excelente for visiting the Lake District. After you parked your car, you can walk to restaurants for breakfast, lunch or dinner and tea 😊. This is a spacious home, clean and well equipped. We were a family of 4 adults and 2 children (1 couple, 2 single adults) the bedrooms were comfortable and having 3 levels worked very well for us. We cooked most days and had everything we needed. There were some very thoughtful touches, tea, coffee, milk and sugar in the kitchen, enough for a cuppa on arrival, a few dishwasher tablets and bits so I didn’t have to rush to the shops. The location is amazing, easily walkable to shops, wonderful fish and chips and many other restaurants and pubs. It is then about 10-15 minutes walk to Lake Windermere were the children loved swimming in the lake while we relaxed in the park overlooking them. The parking is tight but doable, my daughter had her car (Ford fiesta) and that fit nicely in the garage, my car was outside the garage (Nissan Qashqui), it was tight but manageable. We had a couple of maintenance issues but someone was round very quickly to do whatever they could to fix things, good communication throughout. The area is outstanding and a week was nowhere near long enough, we hiked, swam, climbed and explored and feel we have seen a very small part of the Lake District, we will be back.

The house is in an excellent location which gives great flexibility and no need to use the car. We recommend parking large cars in the town car park as they could not fit in the garage but we knew this would be the case. The sofas are large enough for a group and we really appreciated the quality beds and showers and the heated boot room and sauna would make a big difference if it was raining/cold. Would very much like to stay there again.

I can highly recommend this property, My family enjoyed a very fortunate (weather wise ) week here in July 2021. I cannot make any comment about the sauna as their was no need to use it, the entire week the tempreture was in the very high 20's. A first for me in the Lake District. As for the house, it was perfect for 6 adults and three young children. It was clean, well equiped and comfortable. Location is wonderful. Parking was well notified as being tight, which it is. However anyone with slightly above average driving skills will find it no bother, and our cars are no Mini's. As for the hosts, they were fantastic and helpful. I did contact them a few times (due to me being doddery!!) and the replied promptly and efficiantly. Hightly recomended

Absolutely fantastic place to stay in the heart of Ambleside. The home was perfect for us to travel to with another couple and our daughters. It was very well equipped and had everything we needed to prepare meals during our stay. Parking is a bit tricky, as with many of the properties in the area and is down a very narrow side road. The garage would not fit a larger car, so I would not recommend if travelling with a larger vehicle. Everything else about the home was wonderful and it made for a very cosy stay.

Sadly very disappointing. Herald cottage completely oversold on site with its skilful photography. The cottage itself is of course well situated in the heart of Ambleside but I’m sorry to say that is it’s only unique selling point. Net curtains with mould at the bottom in front of windows that don’t open in double bedroom, not nice. Fridge freezer which chose to randomly alarm at all hours, very uncomfortable dining chairs, shortage of basic items like wine glasses (although this was quickly rectified when reported) and food tongs. The courtyard shouldn’t really be mentioned in the property description as it’s so small and not a practical space for a family to make use of. The access to parking space needs to be made clear is NOT suitable for all cars, the lane is very very narrow. Finally we expected to find the property spotlessly clean, especially in these times, but we didn’t. A discarded flip flop under a coffee table, a sofa which was obviously thick with dust and a full coffee pot, presumably left from previous resident, gave us some concern not to mention no hand soap or toilet rolls provided on arrival Overall not as expected and slightly confused by the number of glowing reviews. This is not a 5 star property and in fact very much needs some investment.

This is an amazing house, brilliantly located in Ambleside. We had 3 generations staying, 4 adults and 3 children, and we never felt cramped or on top of each other. It was lovely and clean with lots of towels and the boot/drying room came in very handy with the weather over the weekend! One thing I will mention is the parking, it is extremely tight to get back out of the courtyard (I scraped all down one door!) so if you’re driving anything wider or longer than a BMW X2 be super careful!! I would definitely stay here again, I just won’t park there

Such a wonderful stay at Heralds Cottage. Communication was great and the house was super comfy for our Family of 8 (plus baby). The house in situated right in the middle of Ambleside - easy access to shops, the waterfalls and many other attractions. The sauna was a lovely bonus too! We will absolutely be staying here again!

We were group of 8 friends. We had a good time at Herald cottage. Windermere lake, shops and restaurants were at walking distance. The cottage was clean and the common area was nice and cozy. The sauna was great too. The only problem was one of our cars was big so we had a difficult time parking as the road leading to the cottage was narrow. Overall, we had a wonderful stay at Herald cottage.”

We had a family birthday weekend at Herald Cottage and we all really enjoyed it. The house is well maintained, clean, great kitchen with all mod cons. The sauna was fun and well worth a go even in June after a days walking. The drive through the alley way to park up is tight for a wider car and that's the only downside. Its a recommend from us !!

We loved our stay at the cottage. It’s perfectly located, very stylish and has great amenities. It was great to be able to collect the keys from the key safe two minutes away too. Communication was fantastic and the directions to find the cottage were very helpful. It’s location is perfect for the Brathay/Windermere marathon too

The cottage is lovely and comfy, and true to the description. The outdoor courtyard was a great spot to sit in the late afternoon sun A great location to walk to the lake, into the hills and to the shops and restaurants of Ambleside.

A fantastic base for a visit to the Lakes. Lakeland Retreats were brilliant; the house had absolutely everything; and it was in a brilliant location. Can't recommend it more highly.

Had a great stay at the cottage! We were a group of eight adults and the size was perfect. All rooms were clean and tidy. Located in the centre of Ambleside so very good for getting around the Lakes and having amenities on your doorstep. Would definitely recommend to others.
