Characterful cottage with unique, original ‘bend or bump’ features

Hazelnut Cottage displays a host of unique features and is surprisingly spacious although being an old cottage, you will need to ‘bend or bump’ in places. Comfortably furnished and prettily decorated, step inside from the road level down into the hallway through to the beamed sitting room with a quiet reading area and leather sofas to sink into whilst relaxing in front of the gas-fired log effect stove. Along the hallway and up a step lies the social dining kitchen, well fitted with all the facilities you’d expect to be able to fully self-cater. A useful separate laundry and downstairs shower room sit off here along with access to the outside.

On the first floor sit two good bedrooms, one double and a large twin, both proudly displaying original, exposed beams and presented in a traditional, cottage style. The house bathroom is fully tiled and has a powerful shower over a P-shaped bath, basin, WC and heated towel rail.

Outside, a neat courtyard garden with furniture provides glimpses of the nearby fell range and, although there is no private parking, one permit is available for use on several car parks throughout the South Lakes – this can prove quite a saving on your holiday.

Perfectly placed cottage for exploring this popular part of South Lakeland

The characterful Hazelnut Cottage, parts of which date back to the 17th century, was once the village toffee shop and is fondly remembered as such by many locals within the community. Literally, a stone’s throw from bustling Ambleside and a level, half a mile walk to the shores of Windermere, the setting is ideal for those who prefer to immerse themselves in very heart of village life.

Enjoy the varied walking and cycling that the area is so well renowned for right from the doorstep or for a change of pace, enjoy a game of tennis, a round of mini-golf or spend an hour or two at the indoor climbing wall. Relax after an adventurous day on two feet or two wheels with a trip to Zeffirelli’s Cinema or an evening cruise on the Lake perhaps, followed by a meal in one of the many excellent restaurants or bars that cater for all palates and pockets – do call us if you need any personal recommendations.

We have just come back from a wonderful week at Hazelnut Cottage! We felt at home straight away there, brilliant location and very comfortable house. Had a lovely patio at the back with all the evening sunshine too! We’ve been to Ambleside before and the cottage is right in the heart of it, short walk to shops, pubs, restaurants and so close to the beautiful waterfalls and great walks! We are looking forward to staying again already!

This is the second time we have stayed in this cottage and we love it. The location is perfect and it has everything we need for a lovely family break. The complimentary bottle of wine on arrival is a nice touch as is the board game box and book shelf. The terrace is a sun trap that we got to use lots this year as we were lucky with the weather. The downstairs toilet and shower is useful too. Kitchen is well equipped and bathroom is large with a powerful shower. My son and I are allergic to dogs and this property is dog free which is actually quite hard to find at the Lakes. There is no parking space at the cottage but we just find a space nearby with the parking permit. The only other thing that would make it better would be a king sized bed in the main room rather than a double but that is just preference.

We had a great stay in the cottage. We had everything we needed. The kitchen had tea, coffee, salt, pepper, oil, dishwasher tabs, tea towels, washing up things etc, and there was some milk too. There was a selection of wine for us to choose a complementary bottle which was a nice touch. The cottage is so close to the centre of Ambleside with car parks, Tesco express within a minute’s walk snd the rest not much further.

Lovely house in great location. 2 minute walk to closest car park and centre of Ambleside. Parking permit great for time spent at cottage and also for trips around the Lakes. Living room great for relaxing tired legs with 2 very comfortable sofas. Patio area out back a real sun trap in afternoon/evening. House had everything we needed. Internet speeds not amazing but were still able to stream in HD and 4K while browsing on phones/tablets.

We had a fantastic stay at Hazelnut Cottage! It was a lovely spot for our pre-Christmas family getaway. Some really nice Christmasy touches, as well as amazing to have some basics when we arrived. Thank you so much, we will definitely be recommending Hazelnut cottage to our friends! And will hopefully visit again ourselves!

Our second visit to Hazelnut Cottage.Absolutely love the place, could live here very easily. As non drivers, the location is ideal. Roomy cottage, outdoor space, 2 minutes walk from the main street yet very quiet and excellent views towards the fells.Exceptionally well equipped with all cleaning supplies and some every day sundries, cooking oil, coffee etc. (Not just the single dishwasher tablet we've had in some cottages!)Lovely touch of a stocked wine rack with one complimentary bottle, just replace any others you drink.Little gift left is also a lovely touch.Linens are high quality and plentiful supply of towels, extra blankets, pillows etc.I'm a little bit fussy (ocd) and always clean where I'm staying on arrival and the level of cleaning by Lakeland Retreats is of a very high standard, even down to the leather sofas.Comfiest beds ever - we had 2 additional guests for a weekend so sampled them all. High standard of furnishings and very warm and cosy.Only piece of constructive feedback would be to leave a Hoover available. Carpets are pale and clearly previous guests didn't have the courtesy to take shoes off on entering, so a little marked.Autumn had well and truly arrived when we were there, so leaves were coming in but no way of cleaning them up and I'd have liked to leave it as I found it.We will definitely return, feel like this is our little country home

Fabulous quirky cottage in a superb location. Only a few minutes from the shops and restaurants which was really convenient. Well equipped and clean - we had a really comfortable stay. Plenty of walking options locally and the lake is close by too - we hired kayaks (next to the YHA) - a perfect way to explore the lake and nearby river.

Location is amazing. So close to the town centre and lots of walks etc without having to use the car. Cottage cute with a few little extras. Really easy to communicate with the hosts and office is around the corner, which is super helpful and they have good local knowledge. Just need to watch your head on the front door!

Lovely stay in a lovely house. Great location and very central. Very comfy beds. Only 2 min walk until you meet the shops on the main road. I’d also recommend the local sourdough pizza company - fantastic fresh pizzas. The Great North Pie Company did amazing beef and chicken pies to take away hot or cold. Amazing kids entertainment / activities at Brockhole just a 5 minute drive away. During holidays / bank holidays everywhere gets busy and car parks fill up early, so I’d recommend getting to places before 10am. We will definitely be back to stay at Hazelnut Cottage.

Beautiful cottage, very homely feel with all the ameneties you could need to make your stay easy and relaxing. The main bed was one of the comfiest I have slept in, too! Fantastic location, just a 2 minute walk to a local Tesco Express, just before the main centre. Owners were also prompt in responding to any questions and queries. Definitely recommend picking this place if you're staying in Ambleside.

Great location only minutes walk from the centre of Ambleside, car park pass was so convenient as we could park in loads of places for free and wasn’t far to walk from the cottage.
