Embrace yourself in luxurious, 21st century facilities that were once the romantic poet’s 19th century office

As you ascend the external stairs at the front and enter through the main door, the private entrance to Wordsworth’s Stamp House is immediately in front of you. A handy boot room is well placed enabling you to take off your boots after a hard day on the fells, also equipped with cupboard space, work surface and integrated washer/dryer and freezer. From here, step through Wordsworth’s original front door to the beautiful open plan living space comprising a modern kitchen with fully integrated dishwasher, microwave, fridge, electric oven and induction hob with discreet pelmet lighting and spotlights. The relaxing lounge area has deep-cushioned, sumptuous furnishings including two sofas perfectly placed in front of the large smart tv. The attractive, panoramic dining area is positioned in the glorious bay window overlooking the heart of Ambleside, including the famous Royal Oak Public House across the road. The cushioned window seat is just the spot to perch yourself and watch the world go by as Wordsworth did over 200 years ago.

A hallway leads to two luxurious en-suite bedrooms to the rear of the apartment, nice and quiet to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. Bedroom 1 has a king-size bed with window seating, wooden blinds and smart tv. Plenty of storage is available by way of a large dresser and hanging space. The stylish walk-in shower room has a spacious cubicle, basin with an illuminated mirror over, WC and heated towel rail.

The second bedroom has a double bed, ample storage and hanging space, again with wooden blinds and smart tv. The modern, walk-in shower room has a large cubicle, basin with an illuminated mirror above, WC and heated towel rail.

Although the property does not have its own private parking, a parking permit is provided for one vehicle, which can be used on several different car parks in the village and throughout the South Lakes. You can pull up outside the property to unload and collect the permit out of the property.

Historic, grade ii apartment with direct literary links to William Wordsworth

Located in the very heart of popular Ambleside, Wordsworth’s Stamp House proudly displays an English Heritage plaque denoting the building’s Grade II listing and importance. The former workplace of England’s most famous poet, William Wordsworth, the property dates back to 1700 and in 1813, William became postmaster and distributor of stamps for the county of Westmorland for a salary of 400 pounds per year. What was his former office has undergone a major refurbishment to provide generously proportioned, luxurious accommodation for modern-day visitors.

Sitting at the top of Church Street, Wordsworth’s Stamp House is ideally placed to enjoy the delights of this scenic village where a wealth of attractions and facilities can be sampled on foot with little or no need to use your car. Wonderful walking can be had straight from the doorstep and our knowledgeable team are only too happy to share with you their own favourite routes to help you get the best out of your visit. Although you have everything here to properly self-cater, it’s always nice to eat out at least once during your stay. The Lakes are renowned for offering a superb collection of fine dining experiences including five Michelin Star restaurants, one of which, The Old Stamp House located almost adjacent to the apartment – booking is advisable.

A great location in the middle of Ambleside, in a recently refurbished apartment.

Overall, the accommodation was good and ideally situated in the heart of Ambleside. We loved the walk to Grasmere and the Local waterfall. We highly recommend the Old stamphouse restaurant, Kysty's restaurant and my son and wife were particularly impressed with the new vietnamese eatery called Kopi Tiam cafe.

The location was perfect, close to shops and grocery. Everything that we needed was there, and more. The Lake District is amazing, and if I get back, I would feel lucky to stay there again.

Fantastic apartment in central Ambleside. Plenty of room for our family of four, plus dog. Clean, nicely decorated and well equipped for self-catering. The boot room was great for storing all our clutter and outdoor wear. We loved sitting in the living room window seat and still feeling like we were part of the action.

1 Wordsworth Stamp house was lovely. It was so convenient for shops, restaurants and local walks. The apartment was well equipped with everything we required and the kitchen particularly well thought out. It was good to have the two en-suite shower rooms. We found it exceptionally clean and very cosy and warm after a day out. Will definitely book with Lakeland Retreats again. Thank you.

If I had a holiday home, I would want it to be like this. Centrally located. Great for a few days stay. Clean bright accommodation. Great to have a parking permit for the duration.

Definitely the best Airbnb we’ve stayed at. Super convenient location and lots of walks, including accessible walks if you have a pram as we did. In the thick of it: restaurants, pubs and ice-cream on your doorstep! Of course, that does come as the cost of it not being 100% quiet all the time, but this was not an issue for us at all. Look forward to returning! Thanks Michelle!

Really felt at home here. So handy for pub grub and restaurants. Only thing I would like is a blind at front window…. Felt people were always looking in. Other than that couldn’t fault the place. Would encourage anyone to go.

We had a fabulous 4 days in the apartment. It’s beautifully presented with really good quality items, lovely bedding and beds and has everything you could need. The weather was very unkind to us but we’d definitely stay in this accommodation again if we visited Ambleside in the future. The positioning is so central, easy to walk anywhere in the town. I Would say there was noise from a venue at the back, I had earplugs so it didn’t bother me and it was not too late but good idea to pack earplugs. This is one of the best Airbnbs I’ve stayed in. Highly recommended

Beautiful apartment with lovely furnishings. Nice welcome touches. Great location for pubs, cafes and shops, though being in the town centre does mean it’s busier and noisier. Though this wasn’t an issue for us personally. Local dining was fantastic and definitely recommend The Old Stamp House below( book well in advance) and Lucy’s. Very accessible for all of the usual Lakes destinations. Grasmere, Coniston and Ullswater. Fabulous walks from the apartment with one being the walk upto Loughrigg Fell. We had a great week with no rain, so very blessed!! Definitely will return. Thank you.

Lovely little flat which has everything you need as a base for walking the fells and flopping at the end of the day. A perfect location for people watching and for a very short stumble to the numerous nearby pubs/restaurants. Certainly worth trying to book in to the Michelin star restaurant just downstairs and Lucy's down the road. We loved our stay, and appreciated the little touches on arrival in celebration of our honeymoon. Thank you!

We had a wonderful stay at the Stamphouse. The host’s description was very accurate. The flat was very comfy & tastefully furnished. Wi-Fi was excellent, beds comfy, all spotless & everything worked well. We loved the little welcoming extra. It was so helpful to have the car parking permit. We’d really recommend a stay here in the heart of Ambleside. We’d love to return.

Apartment as described and even better than photos in my opinion, entrance great for sitting and removing boots and coats. Extremely clean and comfortable, had everything you’d need for a great stay. The parking permit was really useful, we used the Lake Road car park. You are right in the centre of Ambleside, which is fantastic, so close to all shops and restaurants, bus routes and great walks, however do expect some noise in the evenings from the pub garden at the back and the main road when you are in the bedrooms and have windows open. We’d definitely recommend!

This accommodation is in a fantastic location in the centre of Ambleside with all the usual amenities on your door step. This is well equipped to a good standard. One parking permit is provided and there are a few (one large) pay and display car parks in the town if you have a second car. Walks up on the hills begin at the door or you can saunter down to the lake in fifteen minutes.

We stayed 3 nights as a family of four in July. The property is in the town center and is walking distance to all amenities, including restaurants, transport, and shopping. In addition to the welcome drink, there is a small amount of milk and coffee available. All amenities are available in the apartment. The apartment is very clean and big enough for 4 people. We received a few emails from Michelle and the team after booking about parking, directions, and free parking permits at Windermere that helps a lot to check in. My recommendation for this place is strong and I will return there in the future.

Fab location, great to have the parking permit. Right in the heart of the action for Ambleside’s lovely restaurants (make sure you pre book!) and walks from the door. We did Ambleside to Grasmere and caught the bus back. Very clean and well appointed apartment, small kitchenette with everything you might need and plenty of cups etc. Nice ensuites with plenty of hot water for 2 adults and a child. A fantastic stay, we had such a lovely time!

One of the best places I have stayed. Excellent location and very clean rooms. We love the living room with big window right opposite a pub with good vibes, great if you like to hang out with friends. Professionally managed, with free parking permit in most areas around the lake!

Lovely apartment in a perfect location - we loved sitting in the window watching the world go by after a day of walking on the fells. Dropping off luggage and then parking in the local car park with the permit was a breeze. It can get a little noisy at night with people leaving the pubs and restaurants and rubbish being taken out at the end of the night but considering the location it was surprisingly quiet. Overall we were very happy with the stay and would definitely return in the future!

Nicely appointed apartment in central Ambleside. there can be a little noise at the rear when adjoining restaurant is closing with bottle bin being emptied or staff chat as they linger outside but this is for a short period before midnight. communication with rental agency was prompt and friendly. we enjoyed our stay.

What a fantastic location. The apartment was perfect and exactly what we would expect from the details provided. We loved being central in Ambleside. We didn't need to move the car all weekend! Restaurants, pubs, cinemas and walks all literally on our doorstep! Is the best weekend we've had in the Lake District!

A lovely apartment - tastefully furnished, warm, bright, very clean, amazingly quiet eventhough it was next to the road and opposite a pub. Tricky loading and unloading the car but parking permit worked well. Both bedrooms being en suite was nice.

Excellent location, didn’t need to use the car at all. Property was clean, lovely decor and well equipped. Even though the surrounding area was quite busy and we were opposite a pub, inside the property it was surprisingly quiet. We had a wonderful stay and would recommend the property with no hesitation

We loved our week in The Old Stamp House! It is tastefully and comfortably decorated throughout with everything you need to enjoy your stay in this spacious and characterful apartment. The location is great for easy access to everything that the area has to offer. During our stay we enjoyed a boat trip to Wray Castle, a trip to Brock Hole, bouldering at the climbing wall, Go Ape, a walk up Laughrig Fell, Ambleside playpark, kayaking on the lake and on our wettest day, the pizza movie deal at Zafrellis! The parking permit that comes with the apartment is great, it was busy in the car parks but we always managed to get a space, mostly in Lake Road car park. Unloading and loading the car on the street outside was fine too. There is also a good selection of card and board games in the house. The Prosecco and milk on arrival were a nice touch. Check in and check out was easy. We would definitely recommend a stay at this lovely property!

Beautiful apartment, right in the heart of Ambleside. You couldn't get better. Directly opposite a fab little pub and many restaurants. Although in town center this little gem is still very quiet. Décor is fabulous and stylish. You can tell this has been a labour of love for owners Everything is perfect to a tee. Can't wait to go back.
